"Una Duda" is a classic romantic Venezuelan Vals by Federico Vollmer, a gallant 19th century composer. In his effort to bring all Venezuelan styles and periods to the solo flute format, Luis Julio Toro adapted this elegant piano piece almost literally, showing the original shapes of a genre which would see many transformations during the 20th century.
"Glosas del heladero", fantasy on a theme by Luis Laguna, is Luis Julio Toro's take on what is now a standard theme of Venezuelan music. Laguna (1926-1984) was one of his country's most respected innovatior in genres seldom played abroad, such as the Venezuelan merengue, a playfully shifting 5/8 metre which often goes into sudden binary bouts.
