Tango Sabatier was commissioned by Bernard Sabatier for a five-string viola (with a low E below the C) the “arpegina” he built for his friend Jean-Paul Minalli. The original version of this Sonata in three tangos has some notes that are below the register of the viola, but most of the text fits perfectly in its register, and the color is very similar.
“Piazzolaberintus,” the second movemente, evokes the drifting, expressive laments of Piazzolla’s slow pieces, but the phrases are like broken trajectories in a labyrinth - sudden cuts and shifts in the discourse that seek in vain to escape the repetition of patterns.
